Welcome to Detroit Dirt, a compost company working to turn forgotten parcels of land in Detroit into urban farms that not only feed, but revitalize our community.
We know the road to this vision will be long and of course- dirty, but this is Detroit and our entrepreneurial spirit is what defines this city. We’re not afraid to roll up our sleeves and dig down deep to make this city grow again.
Together, we can use the foundation of this great city- its dirt- to make it great once more. Detroit Dirt is proud to be part of the urban renewal effort to rebuild Detroit from the ground up.
To become an engine for the urban farming movement by regenerating waste into the resources that will reshape Detroit.
Compost is decomposed organic material from either plant or animal matter. Composting is a natural process that continuously occurs in nature. Seeds grow into plants which uses the sun's energy to extract nutrients from the soil. When the plants die or shed their leaves, the decompose-returning to the earth the bounty they thrived upon in life. That's compost. Animals sustain themselves by eating plants and return nutrients to the earth through excrement. That's compost too. And while this all may sound a little gross, it all comes back to that circle of life.
And life is good.
Well it's simple.
We can take something that would have wasted and make something good from it
and no one else does it.
Compost is great for gardeners because it improves the soil, which in turn supports healthier and more productive plants. Compost provides virtually all of the essential nutrients for healthy plant growth. For gardeners, compost is king. And at Detroit Dirt, compost is what we do.
We sincerely hope our model will inspire others to produce their own compost. Pile on, people.
GO FULL CIRCLE
On the surface, Detroit Dirt's work is making compost. But on a higher level, we see something much bigger and far more rewarding: creating a complete circle of life in Detroit.
By advocating the community garden concept, we see that we can lower transportation costs. Reduce the environmental footprint. Create business. Develop neighborhoods. Instill a ling-post pride. And most importantly, help all of Detroit learn a little more about self-sustainment.
